Haeger Potteries was an American ceramics manufacturer founded in 1852 in Dundee, Illinois, along the Fox River. The company originated as a brickyard, using locally sourced clay, and expanded under German immigrant David H. Haeger, who became owner in 1871. In the aftermath of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Haeger supplied bricks that helped rebuild the city, establishing the company’s early reputation. By the early 20th century, Haeger transitioned from brick and tile production into decorative ceramics, introducing art pottery in 1914. The company became known for its innovative glazes, sculptural forms, and accessible design, producing a wide range of items including vases, planters, figurines, and lamps. A major turning point came in the late 1930s with the introduction of the “Royal Haeger” line, designed by Royal Hickman. His work brought a modern, Art Deco aesthetic to the company, including the iconic black panther figurine first produced in 1941.Throughout the mid-20th century, Haeger Potteries became one of the most recognizable names in American art pottery, employing notable designers and producing both decorative and functional ceramics for a broad market. The company operated for more than 145 years, with production facilities in Illinois and a reputation for combining artistic design with large-scale manufacturing. Haeger Potteries ceased operations in 2016, marking the end of one of the longest-running pottery manufacturers in the United States. Today, Haeger pieces—particularly those from the Royal Haeger line—are widely collected for their distinctive glazes, mid-century design, and historical significance in American ceramics.
